5 easy ways to be greener
Do you want to be greener If you’ve managed to remember reusable grocery bags for 90% of your shopping sprees this year, you are ready to make some more environmentally conscious changes in your life. And it doesn’t have to be difficult!
You can reduce your carbon footprint and give planet earth a big high five with just a few lifestyle changes – and your health might even thank you for it!
1. Ditch disposable pads & tampons!
During the course of a person’s life from menarche to menopause, approximately 12,000 disposable pads and tampons are used – that’s a lot of junk. These end up in landfill or dumped in the ocean, and the plastic they are made of can take hundreds of years to break down. Our Greentimina calculator can help you see how much waste your period is causing.
Fortunately, there is an environmentally friendly alternative – menstrual cups! Made from 100% medical grade silicone, Lily Cups collect menstrual flow rather than absorbing it like pads and tampons. They are completely reusable and can last up to 10 years – with around 3250 tampons! This is a large check mark in the “Reduce” and “Reuse” columns. It’s a larger initial investment, but because it lasts so long, it can save you around $ 70 a year. What is there not to love?
2. Consider eating less meat
One of the best ways to help the environment is to eat less meat and opt for a diet that is more focused on vegetables and seafood. A recent study by the United Nations shows that animal husbandry alone causes more greenhouse gases than any means of transport in the world. Seriously! With cattle using more than 30% of the world’s land, human activities now account for around 9% of CO2 gases – and that’s just CO2.
If you are used to eating meat frequently, try gradually reducing it to once a week – consider it a boon! Even if you can’t live without it for health reasons, filling your diet with alternatives when possible means you can invest more in sustainably produced meat!
3. Reduce Bottled Water – Go Reusable!
Staying hydrated is very important, but buying bottle at a time isn’t an answer to quenching your thirst. Research by the Pacific Institute has shown that in the United States alone, around 17 million barrels of oil are used annually to make plastic for disposable water bottles – enough to fill up 1 million cars. With only 23% of plastic bottles recycled in the US each year, around 38 million water bottles pile up in landfills.
Invest in a reusable water bottle or thermos made from a sturdy material like metal. You can carry the water you need with you. If you run out of water, stop by a fountain or stop at a restaurant and ask them to refill you. Easy! Reusable bottles are much better for your pocket and the environment, and an easy way to make a big difference.
4th Try walking or cycling to work
While the idea of exercising in the morning sounds like a real burden to some, walking or cycling to work has many amazing benefits. First of all, the congestion on your morning commute actually causes more pollution than normal, as more fuel is burned when a vehicle is stopped and started. With more cities – big and small – investing in bike lanes and bike sharing systems, there has never been a better time to drop your car keys.
And if that’s not enough to convince you, research has shown that traffic jams can negatively affect your body, causing back pain, as well as increased blood pressure, anxiety, and even cholesterol. A little boost of endorphins before you go to work will make your day a lot brighter!
5. Shop smart, sell smart.
In every house there is a drawer or a cupboard with things that they do not use or need. Get rid of the things that are clogging your life by selling them or giving them away. What you don’t want is going to help someone else buy new ones and add more waste. Invest in products that last a long time, are reusable and don’t need to be replaced frequently. Fast fashion might seem like a budget saver, but you will spend more in the long run by replacing things that just don’t last.
And it’s not just what you put on your body. Sturdy canvas bags are a great way to skip the plastic for your grocery store. And we have lots of ideas for reusable items for your bathroom!
