Strolling – it’s free, but it surely works wonders for physique and mind well being
Walking is the medicine that every doctor should recommend – it is free, but it works wonders for the health of the body and the brain. Walking burns fat deposits, speeds up metabolism, protects mental health and your back.
Dr. Shane O’Mara, a professor of experimental brain research at Trinity College Dublin, is a psychologist and neuroscientist studying brain functions, including stress, memory, depression, and brain responses to social, cultural, and political issues.
Dr. O’Mara thinks that walking is a medicine that every doctor should recommend to the patient. The professor himself enjoys long walks and reminds his followers on social networks to take long walks frequently.
O’Mara advises that if we sit for a long periods of time during the day, we should take a break and that break should actually be moving around and walking.
“The body is not made for a sedentary lifestyle – sitting all the time is a torture for the body” – O’Mara says. “If you start walking, your body will be infinitely grateful.”
Thanks to walking, you will eliminate the unfavorable changes in the muscles, the accumulation of fat deposits and you will regulate your blood pressure, but you will also speed up your metabolism.
We wrote an article before where we refer to a study saying that our metabolism does not slow down because we age, but rather because of the lack of movement as we get older.
In the next video Dr. O’Mara explains why he thinks that walking is a superpower we don’t we posses.
“As we walk, the state of our brain begins to change dramatically, we become cognitively mobile, and the brain is activated. During walking, the electrical rhythms of the brain neurons begin to activate and accelerate. We start to breathe differently, and the brain and body are ready for action,” he told Metropolitan.
“To our own detriment, we neglect the benefits we can get from walking – health, mood, the ability to think consciously. “Many people today live in a completely unnatural environment, because they spend most of the day in front of small screens.”
