Urban life means everyday stressful situations. Fast living, long working hours, and responsibility make most people feel exhausted, stressed, and under constant pressure.
Investigations by Dr. Mary Carol Hunter of the University of Michigan have shown that being outdoors greatly reduces the negative effects of urban living.
“It has long been known that staying in nature reduces stress, but we didn’t know how. “Our research shows that you have to spend at least 20 minutes to half an hour outdoors every day,” said the author of this study.
You can go for a walk in the park or the forest, ride a bike, sit in the grass and meditate. It is important to be surrounded by greenery and nature, away from the noise of the city.
The study included 44 people and lasted eight weeks. All participants went outdoors three times a week for at least 10 minutes. They were advised not to talk or to use social networks and phones. This was the only restriction and participants were given the freedom to choose and explore activities in the great outdoors.
Each participant gave a new sample of their saliva at the beginning of the study and then after the first, third and last week. The results showed that cortisol (stress hormone) levels decreased by 21% in people who spent at least 20 to 30 minutes outdoors every day or every other day.
Based on the research, it was concluded that you only need to spend 20 minutes a day to balance cortisol levels and relieve stress. Spending more time outdoors will improve both your mental and physical health.
Numerous studies also show that outdoor physical activity and meditation in nature can be very important in regulating mental health in humans.
